Hacking the Unknown

The Stone Chambers Part 1

The Stone Chambers Part 1 –

Lem has been stashing weapons in Duc Duc Goose on the sly.

Bobbie makes a ton of food.

Bobbie writes a thorough report that give anyone using the notes a +1 going forward on anything that is helped by the notes.

Duc and Constance discuss the Stone Chambers entry in his book. Constance admits it.

Duc apparently is not thrilled about the weird happening to him.

Constance flat out lies to Duc about the risks of the journey. And warns him not to pick up any odd  gummy worms or odd things.

They get a romantic suite in the Apple Butter Inn, and also Arry is getting her own room which she is willing to share. Jordan gets their own room.

Lem and Duc discuss staying in a tent.

Bobby puts out a feast of fairly crappy food.

Outside Bobbie’s house shadowy figures are watching. One of them is Tim shaped. We do not notice them.

Constance reviews Bobbie’s notes. And does badly. Mysterious spying figures know what we are up to.

Leopold tries to figure out what made returning to the truck so impossible – Leopold thinks he can cast a spell that can pierce through that the getting lost effect. However it has a problematic side effect that makes us easier to trace.

Lem is bringing the M4. Duc is bringing a baseball bat. Lem “Fonzied the gun” – reveals a firearm hidden in the truck. It has Loud and is 1 harm.

Bobbie takes her fuel can filled and some shelf stable food.

The hike is nearly an hour of hiking.

Bobbie lets Dion know she is going “camping”.

Leopold thinks this is a “place that likes to get people lost”. We can probably find the place but it might be hard getting back.

Lem is going to try to use a compass and map to keep track of the route back. He does badly but is confident he knows how to get back.

We arrive at the Stone Chamber. Constance recognizes it as the place she lost her virginity.

The markings look like ancient Irish Ogum writing.

Lem sets up a perimeter inside the cave. Bobbie stays outside with Constance, Leopold, Duc and Arry. Jordan “the kid” joins Lem. They use no lights. Lem directs Jordan to a tactical position.

Lem does well on “tunnel ratting”.

  • Lem discovers three gelatinous snakes which move arachnoidally.

Leopold investigates with Arry’s help:

  • A very long time ago, a great seal was enacted to keep something in.

    • The writing dramatically lost it’s power 20 years ago (Constance)
    • a couple of years ago something got out
    • a year ago something happened to make it active

Arry sees a Branworm that does harm to her. Duc comes to her rescue. Bobbie gets ready to fire at the thing. Duc gets wrapped around the chest by a Branworm after hitting it with his baseball bat.

Lem and Jordan get attacked by 2 snakes.

Lem says “Take the one on the right, I’ll take the one on the left” crossing in front of Jordan.

Lem and the snakes exchange harm.

Bobby grabs the snake and is holding it. It hurts her. Arry tries to hurt the Branworm. Arry hacks the snake with her sword. It is mostly cut up, not severed through. It blurts a ichory, bloody fluid.

Leopold zaps the Branworm in Bobbie’s hand.

Constance reads “Unkillable, ever reborn until the curse is broken.”

Jordan harms the worm with their hands. It gets ripped to pieces and gross things happen.

Lem attacks the other one. He empties the magazine into the worm.

The extra worm dies from incidental ricochet and morale failure.

Lem and Jordan are covered with slime.

Constance gives Duc some tea.

The tea and Jordan calms down Duc.

These things are Branworms. They are part of the reproductive cycle of the Great Worms of Ulster.

The Great Worm and the Branworms are connected. If one exists the other cannot be killed. The Fianna apparently used something in a silver cauldron to coat the swords of the Fianna to kill it.

A group of fairly well armed men wearing flak jackets come up with automatic weapons and try to drive us into the Stone Chamber. There are at least eight of them.

Leopold puts up a wall of ice, and Lem and Bobbie fire at the men.

Constance realizes the men have nothing going on in their brains.

Lem leads the party deeper into the cave.

Flashbacks

Jordan & Stroud & Constance

The next day they have brunch.

Jordan apologizes. Jordan and Stroud set up a regular schedule.

Small talk. Coffee.

Bobbie’s connections:

Constance

Bobbie and Constance are cousins who summered together in Maine. Bobbie is 1.5 years older than Constance. Bobbie’s and Constance encountered the weird while “playing pretend” and Bobbie for years didn’t believe it actually happened because they were playing pretend. It started when they were catching fireflies.

Lem

Bobbie was on a training conference with a partner, Drake Martinson drink at the Cambridgeport Saloon. Drake gets hit on by a vampire (Helena). He leaves with the woman, Bobbie keeps playing darts after losing $30 in drinks. Drake does not get up for the seminar, Bobbie goes to the training seminar. Bobbie goes back to the saloon. She asks around about the woman. She picks up on the fact that the woman is dangerous, and ends up in a bad part of town.

She can’t figure out why the woman is walking towards her in a way that makes her turned on (not that into girls yet). Battlefield awareness kicks in when the vampire she goes for the neck.

Bobbie pushes her away and staggers back. Bobbie runs into an alley and here’s the vampire growl get her. She draws on Drake who turns out to be the one following her, and then lowers the weapon. She realizes that Drake is unusually sickly looking and got his hair dyed back. He rushes at her. He tried to hit her, misses, and destroys part of a brick wall as Bobbie dodges the punch.

They are both distracted by Lem’s cart approaching. Bobbie shoots Drake in the face and it doesn’t stop him, Lem stakes him with the mop. Drake disappears in a shower of sparkle dust.

No one ever brings this up, including the Sheriff.

Lem takes her back through the tunnels.

They chitchat about their backgrounds. He takes her to the People’s Republik.

She texts with Constance.

Bobbie returns with a book on Vermont’s monsters.

Jordan and Duc

Duc is there to cater a party by Blake. Blake is trying to set up a burn. Jordan is there as well. The burn is going. Duc starts getting ready to go. Out of nowhere Jordan stumbles out into the road in front of Duc’s truck and Duc hits the breaks. Jordan is super beat up. Duc drags Jordan into the truck and Jordan gets in. Jordan tells Duc to “DRIVE”. Duc hits something and then an arm comes over the top of the truck. Duc shoots a 45 at the monster. Jordan attacks the monster clinging to the car and melts it off. The bumper comes off the truck. Duc gets a glimpse of their “under armor”. Jordan refuses to go to a hospital. Duc offers to bring Jordan to his cousin.

Lem is having dinner with the family. Duc brings Jordan into the middle of after family dinner time time. Duc asks his cousin for help (doctor Mika). Mika helps Jordan.

Jordan and Lem

Jordan and Lem are chatting. Jordan asks Lem what he believes in. Lem doesn’t believe in a specific ideology but thinks there probably is an order to things. Jordan tries to convince Lem there is a higher power. Lem doesn’t bite.

“I told you I had a calling one time, I didn’t tell you what that meant.” “I figured it was personal.”

Jordan says they believe in a higher power which directed them to deal with the evil in the world.

“Maybe there is an angel looking after you even now.”

Prequel to the Stone Chambers:

About a year ago a small private aircraft crashed near Woodstock. No search parties ever found the plane, the only reason we knew about it was air traffic signals.

Ollie and Sallie get lost (tweens). We have organized the search parties, and we found them right on the outskirts of town. They don’t really explain what happened. That’s when things started getting weird (probably unrelated).

String of petty crimes, violence, smashed windows, never found out who is behind it. The Sheriff Luke Thompkins takes Bobbie off the case. Tells Bobbie just to stop pursuing it. The crimes get worse. Now there are more thefts. The thefts start being focused on items of folklore and old artifacts. There is a lot of archaeology in this town.

Then the first body is found, and Bobbie goes out to the scene. The sheriff shows up with the coroner, Bobbie is waved off. The sheriff shows up half in pajamas.

When Bobbie comes back after her time off, there is no sign the murder even happened. Bobbie gets waved off hard.

Bobbie invites Tim McPherson (the dispatch) over for a beer on the porch. Tim gets very nervous by the conversation. Tim starts shutting down and getting weird and pounds down the beer and then takes off quickly. The next day Bobbie finds out she is on vacation.

Bobbie takes hikes with her “bird hunting” notebook and her binoculars to check things out. She sees something glint on a ridge that’s about the same height as her. She marks trees as she goes.

Bobbie finds an entrance to a stone chamber. There are dozens around here. It might have been recently excavated. All of the visible stones have weird scratches on them. Vertical lines and dashes and slashes across the lines. They were deep but there has been erosion and now they are shallow. She takes notes of them and photos. There is a surprisingly large opening in there.

Bobbie clambers into the chamber, she realizes that there is something in there. She thinks it’s a snake but it’s more gelatinous.

Bobbie retreats carefully following the chalk marks. Bobbie gets very very lost. Dawn appears and she is extremely hungry and she finally finds her car.

She eats a power bar and Gatorade and Red Bull.

Bobbie heads home. Tim is leaving my house. Tim runs off.

Bobbie calls Constance.

Duc has received an invitation to the Vermont Windsor County food festival. It’s next week. He is being invited to present his recipes. He pays a $50 fee to set up, gets to keep all the profits. It’s totally legit. It’s an earlier date than usual.

Duc Duc Goose is going to go to the festival.

He invites his buddies.

“Did Blake put me up for this? This sounds a lot like the burn.”

Blake is out of network.

-———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Duc finds an entry on Vermont about 20 years ago about a Constance Smith breaking a seal on a stone chamber.

Constance knows that these stone chambers are ancient prisons.

Jordan’s mission sense does not ping.

They all decide to go. They are going to stay at the Apple Butter Inn.

Leopold remembers there is a location correspondence spell that he has been looking for an excuse to try out.

-———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The last 20 comments in a row on the Stone Chamber site are all a chain from Suddenly Blake.

Bobbie creates a google alert for Stone Chambers – Vermont.

Jordan and Blake

Blake has a last minute counseling appointment. He is wearing something with an 80’s amount of zippers. Jordan is in her office.

Blake arrives the way he normally does.

Jordan is welcoming.

“I don’t actually know who I am.” + babbling + “I have to process a lot of information very quickly and most of it is wrong.” “It keeps me too busy to be confused which I find very relaxing.”

“Let’s start at the beginning.”

Jordan notices there is nothing on his Psiree’s agenda.

Description of what Psiree does.

Messages

Agenda

Tells him where to Scrounge food.

Yesterday there was a bug that was eating people’s happiness

“Mostly I just need to be places to hear things or see things. Mostly pretty boring but it sticks in my head.”

“I imagine my father was a spy and my mother was a scientist and she created a formula that made him super strong and smart and likeable.”

He’s been in and out of the system because every once in a while he has to be in Kansas.

Not a typical case of Freshman Identify Crisis

You Jordan’s mission sense tingles.*

Blake reacts badly to being called a special young man.

Jordan gives Blake a jammy dodger.

Art therapy.

Blake starts drawing his mind map.

Psiree is an androgynous slightly feminine mostly featureless glowly green CRT figure.

“No I don’t remember those things yet.”

“Blake, I think I can help you.”

Jordan and Stroud

Interior Stroud’s office

Stroud is working on a grant application or something. Jordan knocks.

“Enter”

Jordan, 5’8”, slim, blond, shoulder length hair in a pony tail.

J – “Professor Stroud I have a matter to discuss with you.”

J – “Before we begin, I’d like you to look at me.”

S – “Oh, I see. Well, then, what can I do for The Host.”

J – “I need your help.”

J – “I’ve been sent to help and protect. You know more about the threats that I need to deal with than I do.”

S – “People can be very confusing… they made you a counselor?”

J – “I have been trained, and I have some skills.”

Shroud asks for an exchange, Jordan offers a favor. From the ineffable, from Jordan and Jordan offers help resisting Darkness.

The door comes slamming open and Constance steam rolls over the conversation.

“Blah blah, and I need to get laid, blah blah blah” (Lisa can’t remember the words)

S – “Jordan is in the know.”

C – “But more importantly a book on summoning dragons has gone missing!”

J – “Perhaps I can be of assistance.”

The scene shifts to the Library

Tea is offered, Stroud points Jordan to the oolong.

J – “I don’t suppose there is a security camera.”

C – “The wards haven’t been tripped, which is tricky.”

Stroud finds some clues that point to a local politician.

S – “He must have made a deal.”

They go eat dinner at Meadhall.

Six hours later

S – “Who knew, I would never have suspected. I think I need to get a new suit.”

C – “The lived in, brimstone smell is in this year.” “Welcome to Boston.”

J – “I already feel at home.”

Stroud offers Jordan a ride back.

Constance flirts unknowingly, Jordan kisses her hand. Constance pinches Stroud’s butt.

Stroud’s car

Jordan asks Stroud about Constance and their relationship status.

Stroud notices the crush Jordan has.

J – “I am above mortal considerations.”

Stroud needles them.

Jordan rejects the notion summarily and with great nervousness.

“I am not hear to dally with mortal tarts. I’m not here to become entangled with fleshly concerns.”

“Jumped up spell slinger.”

“I’m not experiencing emotions, I’m completely in control.”

Lather, rinse, repeat.

“My mortal body is irrelevant.”

“It really isn’t.”

Lather, rinse, repeat.
“I need to learn not to blow my cover.”

More teasing, then Jordan gets invited to brunch.

Jordan and Lem

Aaron will submit the clues

Frat Party – Alpha Tau

Succubus was leading a frat boy down a tunnel, she smelled of sex but the wind tasted of brimstone. Her lipstick burns. Lem and his cart was stealthily following behind her.

Jordan is hunting the succubus from above and surprises them.

The demon hisses and scurries down the corridor.

Jordan drags the boy out and calls 911.

Lem is confused as to how the trap went wrong.

Jordan sees Lem staggering backwards, fumbling with his overturned janitor’s cart, pulls out an M4 and fires off a solid six round burst straight into the midsection of the onrushing succubus.

Jordan engages the succubus into hand to hand combat.

Lem gets out the 45, shoves Jordan aside and shoots into the succubus.

Jordan grabs the mop, upon Lem’s demand.

Lem hands Jordan a flask of bad alcohol.

“You’re Lem Cooper. You haven’t shown up for any counseling appointments.”

They go get coffee.

Lem mentions that he needs to return a book on Succubus Summoning to the librarian.

Lem also mentions that he wants to ask out Constance.

Jordan isn’t used to drinking yet.

Lem talks about his backstory, the Dreameater.

“There is an evil deeper than what men do to themselves. I was in a position to do something about it, so I do.”

“I don’t think you need counseling, I think you need redemption.”

Lem agrees to counseling as long as the sessions take place at bars and pubs.

Stroud and Blake

Blake is eating a pizza in an alley.

Stroud has tracked a fire monster to the alley, it has already killed three people.

Blake, sitting on the ground is enraptured by his pizza.

Out of the shadows, looming over him, a fiery serpentine form licks it’s lips.

Stroud comes from around the corner “Run.”

Stroud starts chanting, waving his amulet about and a wall of ice appears between Blake and the fire monster.

Blake is not afraid.

But Stroud does barely win.

“You’re late, I saved you a piece.” Blake hands Stroud a piece of pizza.

Stroud opens up his 3rd eye. Constance takes down her hair. This is serious.

Is there anything here we haven’t noticed yet. No.

What’s most vulnerable to Stroud and his ice powers and/or a gun.

Seamus O’Flynn is most vulnerable. He’s sort of a pushover.

Punky Chick (Gabrielle?) is almost as vulnerable.

Helena is least vulnerable.

What would be tactically valuable? Helena is sensitive to fire. Most vampires are sensitive to silver.

Jordan calms us all the hell down. Seamus and Gabrielle(?) are calmed by Helena

Stroud and Helena talk.

Helena walks up to Constance and offers Constance a lighter. The better to light her up? Lem and Constance stand down and release the thralls. Seamus explains what’s going on.

Helena wants in on the deal. It doesn’t sound too bad. We can alter the deal to include the vampires as ‘humans’ which more or less means people of this plane.

Stroud tells the Masons how it’s going to be.

Helena doesn’t want the power levels to change too much and wants to help. She does not think that most humans are qualified to make the ahem budgetary considerations that are required for a deal like this. There have been periods of too little power.

When the energy levels get too low, humans suffer more disease, civil unrest at alarming levels (for a vampire.) It’s usually worse for non-humans. Which makes it worse for the humans. Starving creatures are not good neighbors.

Helena has last name and it’s Buford. Helena’s maker is named Kristoff, but he is not a denizen here and has no interest. Jordan investigates a mystery. What goals does this creature pursue? Self interested, but no limited to self.

Duc gets something special in his cargo pants. Oops! It’s a booklet. Kind of a field notes booklet (small hardcover) Hiram McPherson’s Notes on the Unusual and the Impossible. Very useful!

Helena has useful suggestions for improving the amount of energy created. Build in some type of accounting system so we know what kind of bargaining power we have. Lem suggests we make sure to get a receipt. Operate from a position of power not fear.

“The abomination has a point.” Allows Jordan.

Constance gives Helena the step off my man, bitch glare from behind her perfect alabaster neck. Helena’s butt wiggles in a saucy-but-knowing manner.

Stroud has some ideas.

Opening Ceremonies

Thomas comes in. He has gotten a makeover from Stroud’s tailor. Still loud, but no longer deafening. The pinstripes go in the right direction.

Thomas meets the vampire.

Since Suave is taking on the hosting duties, he sets down his glowy rock and looks at Reginald who just nods. The rock changes colors, the candles all light themselves, not in a ferocious way. Helena is cool with it. Thomas looks proud of himself.

Some sound comes out of his glowy rock. It is a heraldic processional song. A shimmery portal opens. Small giant beavers come through awkwardly. Bigger giant beavers come in after that with less awkwardness. Trays levitate in and set themselves out. The food all looks familiar but not right. Colors are a bit off, shapes are a little weird but it’s all basically food.

Thank you all for allowing us to come and speak with you today. These are our children, Jordann and Syndome. The beavers look nervous. All the beavers smile. It is not okay.

The booze might be a bit potent you might want to add water.

Blake has already had the booze. One is smoky and the other is dry but fruity.

“It’s amazing how fast you get used to giant beavers.” Constance

Blake hits on Jordan. Badly.

Stroud chitchats with the Suave. Duc tries the food. The beavers are in a damn good mood. Or is that dam good?

The trouble with vampires

Monster of the Week 6/11/18

The SuaVe will bring the food next time. We are ready to begin negotiations. Stroud plans to skim some power off the top. Lem is investigating the grossening of the tunnels.

Lem’s investigation of the tunnel grossening reveals that smaller-than-SuaVe beavers came through a portal badly confused, pooped uncontrollably and clawed at the walls trying to get back through the portal that was no longer there. Then they makd strange beaver hand signals and vanish. They are similar to Stroud’s hand gestures, but not the same. Lem gets a copy of the video. But not officially. Because giant, pooping beavers.

Blake invites everyone to the screening at Constance’s place. Although he doesn’t actually know about the beaver pooping. Frankly, he was hoping for a Bond movie.

Stroud conjectures that these beavers are subject to extreme violence. Their claws are probably the most dangerous thing. They are very big and strong and they have teeth. We call Thomas. He looks much the same. He’s blending in by wearing a skirt over his trousers. He has to be invited in.

We show Thomas the smaller defecating beaver video.

Thomas recognizes these beavers. They are Jor-Dan and Syn-Dom, younger beavers who make a lot of mistakes. The sons of Marcotte and Delvan whom we have met. After the two mini beavers came through, they moved the portal to someplace less traveled by MIT freshmen. This portal seems safely closed. Thomas admits that he can’t easily diagnose the portal without flinging himself into it. Stroud confirms that the portal is definitely not active.

The hastily erected portal has a strong imprint. It’s not that it’s open, but it is a weak spot. And if someone figured out how to open it … This is going to take a lot more spackle. Maybe even cosmic spackle. In the short term, Lem does some work and shores up the physical walls. Has nail gun, will spackle.

Lem finesses Thomas about the beaver.

The plan is we don’t have a complete plan yet, but we don’t need one. We just need to not brandish weapons, wear embarrassing beaver suits, or make too much trouble about the defecating kids and it should all work out okay.

Our plan going forward is to make a plan to go forward.

Constance has 1 Hold from her Dark Past moving forward.

Thomas wants more appropriate clothing, but he is getting better.

We prepare for the reception tonight. In which there will be vampires. Blake just knows it

Everybody but Jordan and Duc are stuck in the boring speeches and stuff. They’ll show up when it gets interesting.

We’re walking down an alley. Down the service entrance. There are three people who are kind of loitering in this area. Only one of them looks like they belong there. Two are women.  And this is the Masons. Dude is average looking but kind of short. He fits in. The women don’t blend in at all. One is wearing spandex and pleather. Trying very hard to be goth. The other woman is wearing a suit. Looks pale. Blonde almost white hair. They are just loitering.

Blake uses Weird to read a Bad Situation. The woman in the suit is the most dangerous. The man has a dagger. The woman in the suit is least vulnerable. They are totally vampires.

Lem uses Tough to Intimidate them to move along. But that won’t cut it. We need to do some harm.  Jordan closes to Soothing Range! Pleather Goth tries to do some Harm. Lem takes it on the chest. Like a janitor.

Pleather Goth does inhuman levels of harm to Lem, but he manipulates her into a wall with his gun pointed at her.

Ari Kicks Some Ass with magical force against the woman in the suit. A beam of lights erupts from her hands! The woman in the suit is absolutely shocked by the beam of light. Blake looks unthreatening and unimportant. Constance pulls out her hair sticks! It’s on.
